| Indie short gets a shot at Sundance | | Posted Sunday, January 14, 2007 2:58:55 PM by Blog57 Team | | An 11-minute short film, shot over two weekends in Quincy and Randolph and cast primarily with nonactors from the neighborhoods, will play in competition at the Sundance Film Festival this week and next. Tze Chun , the writer and director of "Windowbreaker ," is a Randolph native and graduate of Milton Academy and Columbia University. He cast his mother, Ai Cheng , as a woman who is worried about a rash of break-ins in her neighborhood and warns her two young children to stay clear of the Vietnamese teens who play basketball on the street. Bryan Wilson , a graduate of Medfield High School and Emerson College (and recipient of a Boston Globe Acting Scholarship), produced the film and plays a white locksmith who earns the single mother's trust. While film content is already available for cell phones, six independent filmmakers will be the first commissioned to make short films especially for the medium, Redford told reporters at a news conference. The deal was reached with telecoms industry group GSM Association, which represents 700 mobile phone operators in 215 countries, Redford said. The latest addition to the growing list of Louisville-made horror features is "The Box" by Zach Schuyler and Chris Albro. The plot is basic: Bad things happen to people who own a particular wooden container. The script was inspired by an urban legend about a haunted wine cabinet rumored to have been sold on eBay, Schuyler said. The event drew nearly 200 viewers and featured 17 winning and honorable mention short films from diverse locations such as Millville, Galloway, Bridgewater, and even Australia. Now, Main Street Millville is hoping to repeat this success and honor more standout films when they host a follow-up event in February. "We had several films that we did not have time to show," Main Street Executive Director Marianne Lods said during the group's meeting. There are about eight honorable mention films that the organization would still like to show.
