Film reviews

IndieWire at Sundance
Posted Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:02:35 PM by Blog57 Team
This daily Sundance coverage manages to pull your focus away from the parties and multi-million dollar deals, compiling a series of brief webisodes (including "Emerging Talent" and "60 Second Film Reviews") that cover the independent film being celebrated this week. For a series with such short turn-around, the coverage is pretty insightful, with a broad scope and interesting insights from both the well-known and the newbies. By covering both the smaller and bigger films playing, viewers get a solid survey of this year's Sundance experience. And any time you can get emo indie icon David Gordon Green to talk about going Hollywood to indulge his "comedic impulses", the better off the world is. ....

Group still looking for host site for foreign film series
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 11:03:27 PM by Blog57 Team
NEW World Cinema, a foreign film series, garnered rave reviews during its July through September run. It netted The Big Picture Theater of Adventure and Discovery in downtown Appleton about $8,000 in ticket sales. The first film of a second scheduled series, "The Story of the Weeping Camel," played Oct. 7-10. However, The Big Picture closed Oct. 15 when co-owners realized the theater's overall attendance could not generate enough revenue to support its operations. NEW World Cinema's organizing group postponed the remainder of the winter film series so it could search for another suitable venue. "People have come here from other areas where they have access to art house theaters and coffeehouse discussions afterwards, so both the type of movie and the content of movie were of value," said Nancy Heykes, executive director of the Fox Cities Rotary Multicultural Center....

Casino Royale Reviews Appear Online

Now that we have entered the month of Bond, it comes as no surprise that more and more moviegoers are getting a chance to screen Casino Royale and be the first to admit that either Craig is great as Bond or he isn't Bond, which, to them, is a great thing. Capisci? Casino Royale Reviews The good people over at AICN have received two early reviews for Casino Royale and, though both admit the typical Bond shortcomings, both also agree that it is a film that matches up to its buzz. Went to Casino Royale Friday night in London. Good film, great for a Bond film - though I'm not a fan of the franchise on the whole. CRAIG IS NOT BOND. THANK GOD! ....

Devils drop Bolts

MILLVILLE -- When the Millville High School football team reviews game film from its 31-12 Cape-Atlantic League American Conference loss to Hammonton, it will see a lot of running back Christian Helm. Helm touched the ball on 29 of the Blue Devils' 55 plays amassing 229 yards (211 rushing) and three touchdowns sending the Bolts to their fifth straight defeat on Friday. For the game the Blue Devils rushed for 288 yards, compared to just 28 for the Bolts. Yards gained on the ground is often associated with a team's toughness and after Millville (2-5) suffered its latest defeat, coach Tom Wickward recognized toughness as an area that needs to be addressed. "They are a bigger and stronger team than we are," Wickward said. "That is an issue that is a result of January, February and March....

Movie News and Reviews: Babel
Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 11:02:15 AM by Blog57 Team
The latest entry in Alejandro Gonzalez Iarritu's semi-bizarre film repertoire, Babel, is already receiving lots of attention both for its quality storytelling and its purported similarity to last year's surprise hit, Crash. The Amores Perros director, though, has a lot more on his mind than racial tension. If the comparisons to Crash bring people to the theaters for this rich, dark story of communication and violence in the 21 century, then excellent. Iarritu's message is much more global and coherent than anything Crash had to say, without bowing to the contrivances that seem to plague movies with intertwining stories. In this case, we have the stories of an American couple vacationing abroad, a Japanese teenager whose life is plagued by violence, a woman trying to illegally cross the border into Mexico with two children who don't belong to her, and two of the most unlikely criminals....

Sony's `Grudge 2' Extends No. 1 Horror Film Streak (Update1)
Posted Monday, October 16, 2006 6:55:39 PM by Blog57 Team
Oct. 15 (Bloomberg) -- The horror film ``Grudge 2'' debuted as the top film in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, taking in an estimated $22 million in ticket sales for Sony Corp. Martin Scorsese's crime drama ``The Departed'' dropped to second place with sales of $18.7 million, and the Robin Williams political comedy ``Man of the Year'' debuted in third with $12.6 million, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. said today. With ``Grudge 2,'' Sony Pictures extends its streak of successful horror films, becoming the seventh to open in first place since ``The Exorcism of Emily Rose'' in September 2005, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Encino, California-based Exhibitor Relations. It's also Sony's 12th film overall to open in the top spot this year, an industry record, he said....

Film Reviews: Wednesday, October 04, 2006

A lot of big names are connected with The Departed, so lets start with two of the not-so-bigs: Andrew Lau and Alan Mak. Theyre the Hong Kong filmmakers who made Infernal Affairs, the excellent 2004 police drama on which The Departed is based. Their movie was compact and ferociously cerebral. Martin Scorseses Hollywood remake is every bit as brainy, but its the deluxe version. The legendary director successfully converts a tight little thriller into a grand opera, and its the best work hes done in the last 10 years. Reviewing Scorseses The Aviator two years ago, I criticized moviegoers who wanted him to keep making gangster movies over and over again. To those people I say now, youve got your wish. The Departed revolves around two double agents on opposing sides of the law. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) joins and rises quickly through the ranks of the Massachusetts State Police on the orders of Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) for the express purpose of spying on the cops....
